There’s a reason most “lead magnet” posts on LinkedIn flop.
It’s not that the idea of giving something away to get a lead is broken, it’s that 99% of marketers are doing it wrong. You’re probably doing it wrong. I sure was. Until I heard about a friend who’s now consistently booking 10 qualified calls a week from just three LinkedIn posts… all without spending a cent on ads.
So here’s the Growth Hack breakdown of the strategy he’s using (and how to make it your own):
Step 1: Be As Specific As Possible
You’ve seen this on LinkedIn (or Twitter):
“Comment ‘template’ and I’ll DM you our proven XYZ template.”
It works. But only when done right. Here’s what separates the winners from the losers:
Lead magnets must be specific to your ICP.
Not “How to get more leads.” Instead, “Cold email script for founders doing $1M+ who need B2B leads fast.” That phrase subtly says who this is not for while making your ideal customer think, “Hey, that’s me!”Templates outperform everything.
No one wants a 30-page ebook. Everyone wants a one-pager they can swipe. My friend’s top-performing posts are always “fill in the blank” style templates. They get shared, sent to bosses, and even implemented—which means they earn trust.Outcome-first headlines win.
The post needs to open with the result, not the offer. For example:
“This exact template helped one of our clients drive $630k in revenue from outbound last quarter. Comment ‘outbound’ and I’ll send it to you.”
Now, once the comments come rolling in...
Step 2: Manually Follow Up
Yep. This part takes real work. But it’s why my friend is winning while others give up after one post.
He has a full-time team member whose entire job is:
Write three new lead magnet posts a week
Create the lead magnets (usually just 30 minutes with AI)
Build a dedicated landing page for each magnet that collects emails
Manually send commenters a message with the lead magnet emails collected
Follow up 3–5 days later asking, “Did you try the template?”
That last follow-up is critical. Because it opens the door to:
Starting a helpful conversation
Offering to implement the template for them
Booking a call without ever asking for one in the first message
Step 3: Boost It with Thought Leader Ads
Here’s where the 1+1=3 moment happens.
You don’t even need to post three times a week if you’re not ready to hire someone. Just write one high-quality post with a killer lead magnet… then boost it using a LinkedIn Thought Leader Ad.
These are the ads where you boost a post from a personal profile (not a company page). They show up in the feed looking like organic content, loaded with social proof, and drive more engagement than traditional ads because:
They don’t look like ads
The comment prompt naturally increases comment count
High engagement makes the algorithm push them further
My friend didn’t think of this himself. He’s just running these posts organically. But after seeing what we’ve done with boosted posts on our end, I texted him and told him to start testing $50–100 a day behind his top performers. One solid post could run for months.
BONUS: What Makes This Work So Well
This whole strategy works because it's not just about collecting emails. It’s about starting conversations.
When someone uses your template, or even tries to, and you follow up with, “Hey, did it work for you?” you now have a reason to talk. And that convo often ends with a booked call.
That’s why this Growth Hack is like buying the cutie at the end of the bar a drink first.
Compare that to most cold DMs that say, “Struggle with Facebook ads? Let’s book a call so I can help you?” … from someone you’ve never met (or walking up to the cutie at the end of the bar asking for their number without saying a single word beyond that)
So here’s the playbook in full:
Write outcome-first LinkedIn post with a high-value template for your ICP
Prompt people to comment a keyword
DM them the lead magnet manually (or semi-automated)
Send them to a simple landing page that collects emails
Follow up 3–5 days later asking how it went
Use that convo to offer a free strategy call
Boost top-performing posts with Thought Leader Ads
If you don’t have time to do this weekly, start with one. Then boost it. See what happens. The math here is wild—if one lead magnet gets you 10 calls and your close rate is 10%, that’s one new client a week. You’d happily pay $2K a month for that ROI, right?
You might just need to stop calling it a “lead magnet” and start calling it what it really is:
An excuse to start a conversation that leads to revenue.
