🏎️ The $240,000 Growth Hack
Wispr Flow has actually been around for over a year but they did something brilliant for their Android launch last week that us Growth Hackers should study and use!.
Instead of posting another boring “we launched on Android!” announcement… they made a bold challenge. They said:
“If you can type faster than Wispr Flow can dictate your voice — and make the app mess up — they’ll give you a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.”
Now that’s roughly a $240,000 product demo.
And the video showing the challenge is essentially the perfect marketing asset because it proves the product works while also making people curious enough to watch the whole thing to actually see if someone wins the car.
It’s brilliant because it turns a product claim into a public challenge. Instead of saying “our AI dictation is fast and accurate,” they say: prove us wrong and we’ll buy you a Porsche.
It’s the same reason the old Pepsi Challenge worked decades ago, people trust a challenge more than a claim.
And the best part? This only works because they waited until the product was genuinely great. They didn’t launch this campaign when the app had just launched and they were working out the inevitable software kinks. They waited until they knew the odds of losing the Porsche were basically zero.
That combination of confidence + spectacle is what makes this growth hack work.
How To: Turn Your Product Into A Challenge
Instead of marketing your product with claims, turn the core benefit into a public challenge with a bold reward.
If your product is truly better than the competition, the challenge becomes the proof like it did for Wispr Flow. (Quick note to say, I’ve been a power user of them since last summer. It’s truly 2X’d the speed at which I’m able to type. In fact, pretty much every word of every growth hack I've ever sent since last summer was dictated via their macOS app, it’s by far my favorite AI tool ever!)
And proof beats marketing every time. Believe me, but not sure where to start? here are my old signature examples to get the juices flowing 🙂
Marketing Agency Example
Instead of saying “we generate great leads,” run a campaign like this:
“If we can’t generate 50 qualified leads for your company in 30 days, we’ll run your next campaign completely free.”
Film the process and show the results publicly. Suddenly, your marketing isn’t a claim, it’s a bet on your own ability.
E-Commerce Example
Let’s say you sell a premium stain remover.
Instead of posting product photos and reviews and before and after videos, run a challenge like this:
“Send us the worst stain in your house. If our product can’t remove it, we’ll pay you $1,000.”
Then turn the attempts into a video series. Every video becomes both entertainment and product proof.
Software Example
Let’s say you built a scheduling tool that’s dramatically faster than competitors.
You could run a challenge like this:
“If you can schedule a week of meetings faster with Calendly than with our tool, we’ll pay your Calendly bill for life.”
Then film people attempt it.
Now every viewer immediately understands the product’s value — because they just watched it win.
The Big Lesson Here
Most marketing makes claims. Great marketing creates proof.
Wispr Flow didn’t just say their voice dictation was faster and more accurate.
They put a Porsche on the line and invited the internet to try to break it.
And that’s a much more interesting story than a product launch announcement.
