🚀 This Week’s Growth Hack:
How To CRUSH Your Competitors
So there’s an old story about a salesperson who walked into a meeting with a prospect who was ready to choose their biggest competitor. Why? The competitor’s price was lower, and price always wins, right?
Instead of arguing or offering discounts, this salesperson did something brilliant. He picked up the prospect’s phone and called the competitor’s customer service line.
An automated robot’s voice immediately said “You’re very important to us... please hold.”
Then, he hung up and called his own company’s customer service line. An actual human picked up, immediately, and said “This is Suzy from XYZ company, what can I do for you today?”
At that moment, the conversation shifted. Price didn’t matter anymore. The real question became: Who will take care of you when you need them most?
Most companies I meet are busy saying why they are better. The salesperson in the story showed it. He completely flipped the conversation around something the prospect valued just as much, if not more, than cost.
My Takeaway: Change the Criteria
When you can’t compete head-to-head on your competitor’s strengths, i.e. price, size, speed, whatever… don’t play their game. Change the decision-making criteria to favor what you do best.
You don’t need to convince your customer that you’re “better.” Instead, show them how your difference makes a bigger impact on their business than whatever current criteria they are subscribgting to or whatever current criteria your competitors are preaching.
How You Can Use This Strategy
1. Small Software Company vs. Big Competitor
Literally my favorite website of all time does this:
2. Boutique Ad Agency vs. Large Marketing Firm
A prospect might be tempted by the big firm’s awards and famous clients as case studies.
Instead of talking about awards or big client case studies, show how your small size equals faster results.
Point out: “Big agencies take 2 weeks before your camapgins are live due to layers of approvals. We’ll have your ads live in 48 hours from you saying yes to working with us! And When you need a campaign live by Friday, we’ll make it happen.”
Reframe the conversation around speed and responsiveness.
3. Local Home Services Business vs. National Chain
If you’re a local plumber or HVAC company, you can’t outspend a national chain.
Emphasize local trust and reliability: “When pipes burst at 10 PM, do you want a call center, or someone down the street?”
Share examples of how quickly you’ve solved problems for other local clients.
4. Niche SaaS Tool vs. All-in-One Platform
Say your competitor is a huge all-in-one solution, but you specialize in one thing—and you do it better.
Reframe the conversation: “Jack of all trades, master of none—how much are errors costing you because that system isn’t specialized?”
Help them calculate the cost of those errors and highlight how your tool eliminates them.
How to Apply It This Week
Identify where your competitor “wins” (price, size, speed).
Find what makes you different, not necessarily better, but different. Something you can say that they can’t!
Show the cost of not choosing your difference. Guide your prospects to see the implications for themselves.
The best companies don’t fight on someone else’s turf. They redefine the game in a way they can win.
Where can you shift the conversation in 2025? 🚀
