Find ACTUALLY Good Marketing Talent
Finding actually good marketing talent, with actual experience, who can actually move the needle for you is really difficult.
I know firsthand.
I’ve been hiring freelancers on these platforms for years, and over time I came up with little tricks to surface the top 1% of candidates faster. But now I don’t need to anymore...
Upwork just released a new feature called Business Plus and it gives you access to only the top 1% of freelancers on the platform, across 125+ categories, plus an AI feature called Uma Recruiter that shortlists the best matches for you in hours, not days.
It’s like someone already did all the sorting, screening, and shortlisting for you.
For small teams and early-stage startups that don’t have in-house recruiters, this is huge. You can literally go from job post to “I just hired someone amazing” in under 24 hours. All because they cut out the noise and only show you the top 1% of already proven freelancers!
If you’ve ever posted a marketing job and gotten 100+ low-fit applicants... you already know what I’m talking about & just how game-changing that is.
So here’s how I’d think about hiring some of the most common marketing roles using Upwork’s Business Plus:
🧠 Growth Marketer
Look for someone who understands both strategy and execution. Not just a channel expert, but someone who can help set the right KPIs, pick the right tests, and actually run them.
💡 Pro Tip: Make sure they have case studies for each channel they claim to be good at. You don’t want generalists here. Ask to see their actual results, not just what they say they “can do.”
📩 Email Marketer
You want someone who’s a copywriter, designer, and ideally can focus on improving open rate & click rate, not just make pretty emails. Email is only part of the funnel, you need someone who understands where email fits in and how to write and convert, not just “design pretty templates.”
💡 Pro Tip: Look for candidates who have experience writing email specifically for your industry. The language in SaaS vs. ecom vs. B2B services is wildly different.
📈 Media Buyer (Meta or Google)
Only hire someone who can show actual ROAS results for brands similar to yours. And don’t just look at ad creative, look at their account structure, testing cadence, and what decisions they made at each spend level.
💡 Pro Tip: Ask them: “What’s your testing process when a campaign isn’t working?” Great media buyers have a clear framework, like I do. Weak ones blame the algorithm.
🎨 Brand Designer
You want someone who can balance creativity with conversion. Bonus if they’ve worked in direct response or ad creative before.
💡Pro Tip: Make sure they have live links to their design work and aren’t just uploading static Dribbble-style portfolios. Ask to see assets in use… ads, landing pages, socials, etc.
