✏️ The branding playbook behind Beats, Apple, and Nike:
What makes a brand unforgettable? Omar Johnson, former CMO of Beats by Dre and VP of Marketing at Apple, shares how behavior-driven engagement fuels growth and transforms marketing.
That means shifting away from traditional demographic-based segmentation and turning the focus to what people are actually doing. After all, as Omar says, “Huge impact does not need huge budget if you nail the behavior.”

🚀 This Week's Growth Hack:
🤫 Steal: My $50,000 Cold Email Template
I’ve never been the biggest believer in cold email.
Sure, I’ve sent hundreds of thousands over the years, but it never really clicked like ads, content, or referrals did for me. I found one winning single-sentence cold email script worked really for my old agency 5+ years ago but it stopped working quickly.
But you know what I say: a great Growth Hacker experiments with things new and old, all the time. So when we needed to fill some last-minute sponsor slots for my newsletter, I gave cold email another shot. I tweaked the tone, rewrote the structure, and focused hard on clarity over a few weeks of sending…
And then, it clicked.
We’ve now driven over $50,000 in ad sales from this exact email in the last 3 months:

It’s not perfect. Some fancy cold email tool even scored it an 86/100 and gave us tips to improve. But here's the thing, it’s crushing.
So I broke down what made this email work in 5 simple parts vs. what most people usually do wrong:
1. Start with relevance, not your resume
Most people open cold emails with a long-winded intro about who they are.
I opened with:
“Saw [COMPANY]’s verification improvements launch, congrats!”
Why it worked:
It’s a pattern interrupt. It’s personal. It shows I’m not blasting this to 1,000 people. I’m showing up as someone who knows them.
🛠️ Fix for most cold emails:
Instead of “I’m the founder of…” — find 1 recent thing they did that you can nod to. Product launch, LinkedIn post, new hire. Anything.
2. Clear offer, clear audience
I didn’t list every service we offer. I didn’t brag about how great we are.
Instead:
“We help Go Carpathian & MarketerHire reach growth-minded CEOs & Founders.”
Why it worked:
It’s outcome-driven. It’s name-droppy with brands that are similar to the company I’m emailing. And it immediately “dangles the carrot” as I like to say - aka the dream outcome of working with us which in this case is getting their service in front of growth-minded CEO & Founders.
🛠️ Fix for most cold emails:
Skip the full bio. Instead, just show them:
→ who you help that’s similar to them
→ and what carrot” aka dream outcome result you get them
Most cold emails either have zero proof or way too much (a huge list of logos and stats no one reads).
I wrote:
“We reach 270k+ subscribers across our newsletters, with 50%+ open rates.”
Why it worked:
It’s one simple stat. It’s specific. It builds credibility in just 1 line.
🛠️ Fix for most cold emails:
A single juicy stat or proof that builds trust is better than a laundry list of logos or stats.
4. Make the pitch feel like a match
I didn’t say, “We’d love to work with you.”
I said:
“I think [COMPANY]'s talent marketplace would be a strong fit.”
Why it worked:
It’s collaborative, not pushy. It positions the message as a mutual fit, not a favor I’m asking.
🛠️ Fix for most cold emails:
Make your pitch feel like the next logical step, not a desperate plea.
5. The call to action is light
No pressure. Just:
“Want to see our media kit?”
Why it worked:
We aren’t asking people for the most precious thing they have right off the bat aka their time. It’s not “book a call” or “schedule a demo.” It’s just a peek behind the curtain.
🛠️ Fix for most cold emails:
Skip the calendar link in the first message. Ask a question that’s easy to say yes & start a conversation from. It speaks to what we do at Max’s Team, builds trust first!
So what did the cold email tool we use sometimes, say?
Even though this email is driving real results, the tool suggested a few ways to improve:
Be more casual: Slightly casual tone = 22% more replies
Use shorter subject lines: 2-word subjects = 12% higher open rate
Write at a 3rd–5th grade reading level: Simple wins
Avoid long sentences: 0 long sentences = 37% more replies
Optimize for mobile: 80% of replies came from mobile-friendly formats
Honestly? Most of that checks out. It confirmed the core idea: keep it casual, concise, and crystal clear. My favorite thing that the tool advised that’s not mentioned above? Speak at a third grade reading level!
📌 TL;DR: This cold email drove $50k+ in newsletter ad sales because it was:
Personalized, not polished
Focused, not feature-loaded
Casual, not corporate
Clear, not clever
Cold email isn’t dead, long and non-personalized cold email is. If you want it to work, try stealing this format.
