When I was running my ad agency, we had a pitch that worked for a really long time.
“We help e-commerce brands make $4 for every dollar they spend on digital ads.”
We had great case studies. We had the ROAS receipts. We had the team, the messaging, & the testimonials to back up our bold claim. And for years, it worked.
But then… the market changed.
Suddenly, everyone was an ad agency. Everyone helped ecomm brands scale. Everyone had the same case studies, the same decks, the same damn offer. My tagline still attracted our ideal client, but it became harder to deliver that 4X ROAS as Meta ads got more expensive. I no longer felt comfortable using that tagline, and subsequently suffered from distinguishing us from every other agency in the game.
So one day, I decided to try something different.
I wrote a single, simple weekly newsletter. Nothing fancy. Just an easy-to-digest breakdown of successful marketing campaigns… some from clients, some just from around the industry. I kept it short, tactical, and so easy to apply that anyone could steal the insight and use it that same day. I called it Growth Hacks Weekly…
Yup, this exact newsletter!
What you don’t know is, after the very first few sends to just my exported gmail contacts, something crazy happened.
People started emailing me saying:

“Dude, I need you in my corner.”
Fast forward 3 years, and 117,000 people read this thing.
+ Yes, I launched a daily version, but the point remains the same!

📥 Step 1: Export Your Contacts
Before you write a single word, you need an audience. The good news? You likely already have one, you’ve just never organized it.
Here’s what to do:
Start with your inbox: Search for people you’ve emailed with — leads, clients, podcast guests, calendar invites, even people who ghosted you once but showed interest.
Export from your CRM: If you use HubSpot, Close, Pipedrive, etc., pull all your leads and contacts — even the “cold” ones.
Dig into tools like Calendly or Zoom: Anyone who booked a call or attended a webinar is fair game.
Check past webinar or event lists: If they signed up to learn from you once, they’ll likely be interested again.
Pro tip: Don’t overthink it. If someone gave you their email and showed even mild interest in what you do, they qualify.
This isn’t a “start from scratch” project… it’s a “gather and activate what you already have” project.
🧠 Step 2: Pick Your Content Style
This is where most people get stuck — “But what would I even say in a newsletter every week?”
Good news: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You just need to pick one (or rotate between a few) of these 3 tried-and-true formats:
📰 Weekly News Roll-Up
Perfect if your audience likes staying current. Share 3–5 things that happened in their world this week and add a sentence of context or opinion.
Example: “5 things that happened in SEO this week + why Google’s latest update matters more than you think.”
🔍 Deep Dive
Every industry has questions. Use your newsletter to answer one each week in plain English. Go deep on a problem, trend, or strategy that your audience cares about.
Example: “How intermittent fasting compares to low-carb diets — backed by actual science.”
📈 Case Study with a Soft Sell
This is where you show proof of results without sounding like a pitch. Share a mini-case study or behind-the-scenes look at something you helped someone achieve.
Example: “How a simple weekly newsletter helped one founder 2X their booked calls (yes, really).”
You can pick one style and stick to it, or mix it up. The key is staying consistent and delivering real value.
⏰ Step 3: Block Off 1 Hour a Week
You’re busy. Everyone’s busy. But this isn’t just another task on your to-do list, it’s the #1 thing you can do to make marketing easier.
So do this:
Open your calendar right now.
Pick one hour, same time each week.
