🚀 This Week's Growth Hack: The New Yellow iPhone

Do you know who David Ogilvy is? If you don’t and you subscribe to this newsletter, you need to. He is basically the godfather of modern-day advertising and one of the greatest copywriters of all time. He put together a list of “magic words” that barnds should use if they want their campaigns to make a serious impact and one of the words on that list was “new” … Why?

Because people love new things! It’s human nature. New things are exciting and give people an opportunity to be first. To be a winner. To be fresh. To be unique. To be fast. To be so many things…

Well, there is no brand better at executing this growth hack than apple. What’s this week’s Growth Hack, Max?

New!

Because apple will likely have to push the launch of their new iPhone 15 a few extra months this year (and because sales across the board are down), they needed something new to have an excuse to talk to you, run an ad, get you in the store. And what is that new thing?

A new iPhone 14 in yellow! No new features. No changes to the hardware or software. Just the exact same version of the phone they have sold for 6 months now, in yellow.

Now everyone is talking about it!

And a few my friends went out to buy it on day 1. Why? Because they had to have the new thing! So many brands I consult for and see in the wild thing “sale” is the magic word to get people to purchase something in droves but I would argue that “new” is just as powerful of a word if not stronger.

All of Apple’s billboards are now featuring the new yellow iPhone. All of their TV commercials? Promoting the new yellow iPhone! When you walk by their stores? The yellow iPhone is in the window!

Remember, there is nothing truly new or special about the phone other than that it’s casing is yellow! You don’t need a crazy new feature or brand collaboration to have something “new” … For example:

SaaS - Introduce a new feature (maybe AI?) that your potential users have been asking for! And don’t just send 1 email announcing it! Roll out the red carpet for that feature. Run retargeting ads to anyone who visits your website promoting it. Go on podcasts and talk about it… CHECK OUT THIS NEW THING!

E-Commerce - Introduce a new color or even a new limited edition box / casing / holder! The ideas are endless!

Agency - Your new hire! Email all existing clients, potential clients, and post on all your social about your new amazing hire and how they are going to help your clients achieve xyz amazing results!

In summary, great marketers and brands use new simple things as an excuse to get in front of their audience with the message of “new” instead of their normally “buy our product because” message 🙂
