🚀 This Week's Growth Hack: 7 Steps to More Effective Video Marketing

I’m still buzzing from the Growth Hacking Summit I hosted a month ago! One of our 4 speakers was Ryan Atkinson who has built a career helping brands like AWS, The International Standards Organization (ISO), and Vanta create high-converting video marketing assets. He walked attendees through his 7-step workshop for creating videos that don’t just sit in the abyss of marketing videos no one actually watches, but videos that actually drive leads & customers!

So for this week’s Growth Hack, I’m detailing his 7-step workshop here:

  1. What type of video do you want to create?

  • Explainer video: Simplifies complex concepts into easy-to-understand visuals and narratives, crucial for engaging new customers who may not be familiar with your process / system / offer.

  • Solution video: Highlights specific problems your target customer is facing right now and showcases your product as the solution, answering their prayers!

  • Repurpose whitepaper/case study/blog: Leverages existing content in a more dynamic format, maximizing your content's reach and lifespan.

  • Product demo: Provides a hands-on look at how your product works, essential for moving potential customers closer to a purchase decision & painting that picture of what life post-purchase is.

  1. Define your target audience

  • What are the job titles you go after? Targets the decision-makers or influencers within organizations, ensuring your message reaches the right people.

  • Company size? Helps tailor the messaging to resonate with businesses of a specific scale, from startups to large enterprises.

  • Industry? Ensures the content is relevant and addresses industry-specific challenges or opportunities.

  • Placement (underrated): Deciding on the most strategic location for your video to be discovered by your target audience, often overlooked but vital for visibility.

  1. Placement

  • Where do you want this video to live? Determines the best platform for engagement and conversion, whether it's social media, your website, or elsewhere.

    • YouTube: Ideal for long-form content and building a subscriber base.

    • Social media: Perfect for short, engaging clips designed to boost visibility and shareability.

    • Website: Enhances your site's appeal and supports SEO efforts.

    • Paid ad: Targets specific audiences directly, useful for campaigns with defined goals.

    • Event: Adds value to presentations and stands, engaging attendees in a different format.

  1. Outline your first script

  • How long do you want it? Deciding on a length that keeps viewers engaged while delivering the full message.

  • Opener: The first few seconds are critical to hook viewers and persuade them to watch the rest of the video.

  • Ryan’s winners: Incorporate compelling elements that grab attention, such as relatable scenarios or surprising facts.

  • Three key points you want to cover: Ensures the video is structured and covers all necessary information succinctly.

  • CTA: Clearly tells viewers the next step, whether it's to learn more, sign up, or make a purchase.

  1. Storyboard it

  • What do you want to include in this video: Visualizing the script with a storyboard helps plan out each scene, ensuring a smooth flow and that all elements align with the video's goals.

    • Product screenshots: Showcases the product in action.

    • Video testimonials: Builds trust with potential customers through social proof.

    • Stats: Provides concrete evidence to support your messages.

    • Images: Enhances the visual appeal and helps illustrate points more clearly.

  1. Create the video/voiceover

  • Adobe After Effects: Offers professional-grade animations and effects to make your video stand out.

  • Toonly: Simplifies the creation of animated explainer videos, suitable for beginners.

  • Vyond: Allows for easy creation of custom animated videos.

  • Biteable: Provides templates for quick and effective video production.

  • UpWork: A platform to find freelance professionals for custom video production or voiceover work.

  • Record it yourself: Adds a personal touch and can be more cost-effective for startups or small businesses.

  1. Launch & Monitor it

  • What are you tracking for? Establishing key performance indicators to measure the success of your video.

    • Views: Indicates the reach and initial interest in your video.

    • Watch time: Measures the content's ability to retain viewer attention.

    • CTRs (Click-Through Rates):** Shows how effectively the video prompts action.

    • Engagement rate: Gauges audience interaction, reflecting content resonance.

    • Conversion rate: Evaluates the video's success in achieving its ultimate goal, such as making a sale or generating a lead.

My favorite part about this is the storyboarding part! I find myself always just jumping into making videos and spending so much time on the hook that I forget to actually properly storyboard the whole video out! The best movies of all time are completely storyboarded out not only scene by scene but shot by shot… They spend so much time toing to figure out how to improve each little section of the movie. We should all be doing that in for our marketing videos!

If you like this I strongly recommend going the workshop yourself by watching his keynote here, because Ryan certainly brought the heat & helpful insights to the Growth Hacking Summit!
