For The Week Of August 14

Read time: 2.5 minutes

Happy Sunday! This is a huge week for me. It’s been almost two years since selling my ad agency and since then, I’ve been working part-time on a bunch of random projects while golfing and playing with my dog the rest of the time.

As of this week though, I’m back to working “Founder hours” aka 70+ hours a week building my new startup!

More details on that soon… For now, I’ll keep serving you guys with one epic growth hack a week 🙂 See here:

🚀 This Week’s Growth Hack:

60k IG Followers In Two Weeks

My friend sent me this guy’s Instagram profile two weeks ago.

His bio simply said “Design YouTUber (360k subs)” & “Follow for mini-vids”

He had just about 100,000 followers on Instagram and it seemed most of his content was static images of really cool and unique graphic designs he had made. In total, he had around 35 posts… aka a follower-to-post ratio of 2,857 which is 204X bigger than mine (which is 140).

Today my friend just texted me he now has 164,000+ followers! That’s more than 60,000 followers in two weeks! How did he do it? A series of 6 videos posted in the last two weeks all using the same two strategies:

1. Polizarizing Start - He starts off with a polarizing statement in each of the videos. How can graphic design be polarizing? He says he’s going to take the logo of an unhealthy snack and make it seems fancy “I’m gonna make m&ms seem healthy”

Why does this work? Because the human brain is surprised by polarizing things. The moment you hear “m&m’s” and “healthy” together in a sentence, you tune in inquisitively… Like a dog’s ears perking up when someone knocks on the front door. So you are immediately like, oh, what’s going on here?

2. Hooked On The Outcome - Then by the time your brain has registered the two polarizing things and you have tuned in a bit, he is already editing the logo. And because he is building a logo, you are hooked watching the video just because you want to see the finished logo. And let me tell you, the finished logos are AMAZING. So once you watch one, you flip to his profile and know the others are worth the wait too… See for yourself here

Why does this work? Because it increases watch time signaling to the algorithm this is good content and that it should push it to more and more users… Instagram will reward content that keeps people on Instagram more than other content because they make more money the longer people are on the platform! So you gotta find ways to get people to stick to the end of the video and this guy is a master at it!

Practical Example You Could Use

DTC - Say you sell a heavy-duty kitchen sponge that cleans the toughest marks on your sink and doesn’t need soap ever. Instead of showing how tough the sponge is, maybe you polarizing hook is “This one sponge wiht no soap is gonna clean this entire nasty kitchen in under 60 seconds” … pretty polarizing!

SaaS - Say you sell a cold email marketing tool for agencies to find new clients. It always takes hours to set up the campaigns in most tools! So your polarizing statement could be “Watch me setup the cold emailing sequence that drove $100k+ in revenue in just 60 seconds” … I’m intrigued!

Agency - Say you are an influencer marketing agency that helps brands find 100+ influencers. Your polarizing statement could be “Watch me find, vet, and reach out to 100+ influencers in 60 seconds” … Pretty polarizing considering it would take an “Influencer Marketing Coordinator” a week to do that by hand…

➡️ Great marketers start their content (organic ads) with a polarizing statement and keep them

How can you apply these two strategies to your content?
