🚀 This Week's Growth Hack: Making Millions With Memes & Newsletters

A few weeks ago I sat down with Jasin Levin, the author of “MEMES MAKE MILLIONS” and my plan was to ask him all about how a brand can use memes to go viral and get tons of free attention from their target audience… but after I got a few questions in, Jason pivoted to asking me how to grow & monetize his newsletter, knowing the success I’ve had with my 3 newsletters.

You can Listen to our conversation on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple

But for today’s Growth Hack, I’ll be summarizing the playbook he walks through in the episode for getting free attention with memes and my playbook for growing and monetizing his newsletter! Lots of good nuggets below and in the episode itself so let’s dive in!

Meme Playbook

Max Asked: A lot of people who watch this show can’t share the type of meme content that you share… so how can companies who are more brand-sensitive still take advantage of memes?

Jason Answered: You might not be able to be as aggressive as me but you can still be edgy in your niche, pushing against common trends or tropes in your particular industry. If you aren’t that person, hire a comedy writer, educate them about your business/industry/niche & have them write your edgy copy.

We are seeing plenty of startups & VCs post memes. Chris Bakke drove $3m in revenue just from memes! These were memes that went completely viral on twitter organically and then under each meme, he would comment with his software company… THINK of the free attention you can get!

This tweet got 104,000 likes

The first comment that drove tons of free clicks (likely thousands)

Newsletter Playbook

Jason Asked: I run a newsletter called Cyber Patterns about marketing content strategy & using memes to grow your business, but how do I grow it to 100,000 subs and I how do I monetize it more?

Max Answered: Step 1 is the content. Your audience <> content fit with your newsletter is priority #1 so much so that you become the go-to newsletter in your well-defined niche. That’s way more important than size.

From there, how do you grow it? If you are serious, you invest $ in ads. This is what separates the sheep from the herd or whatever that saying is… A lot of people say they wanna do it the “more organic way” because it feels more genuine but then get upset when their newsletter isn’t growing fast. We all look up to Sam Parr & Codie Sanchez & Sahil Bloom… These people are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in ad spend to grow their newsletters so this concept of not spending on ads to grow a newsletter is BS if you are serious about growing it.

You just have to calculate your ballpark ROI when selling your own product(s) in the newsletter then you can get a sense for how much you can start investing in ads, on average, depending on the niche and your brand affinity … 1 to 5 percent of your subs will buy your product annually so you can back into some conservative projects with that nugget.

From there, how do you monetize? I hear lots of people saying things like “oh I need 50,000 subscribers for my newsletter to be able to sell ads and make money from it!” No, that’s not it. The real secret sauce of monetizing your newsletter, even if you have just 500 subs, is to sell them your own product or service, then re-invest that money back into ads to grow your newsletter then you have a bigger audience to sell your product or service to and you can start attracting advertisers. I was making $150k/yr with a 15,000 subscriber weekly newsletter so no, you don’t need a huge list to make meaningful ad revenue
