🚀 This Week’s Growth Hack: The 99 Cent E-Book

This week was too overwhelming on so many fronts, making it hard to write you guys a brand new, highly impactful Growth Hack.

So, I looked through the library of 70+ Growth Hacks (all of which are available inside Growth Hacks University) I have shared since starting this newsletter in March of 2022 and picked to reshare one of the top 3 Growth Hacks of all time. “One from the vault” as some people might say…

Regardless if you read this in July of 2022 or reading it for the first time, I guarantee you have either thought about doing this or have seen someone else doing it and rolled your eyes. So many people are sleeping on this one lately! It’s one of the oldest hacks in the book for a good reason, it works!

It’s a great growth hack to lean on if you need more leads or conversions of any kind!

The Idea
…is to water down [what you do] or [how you do it], into a short 10-to-20 page ebook or deck, and sell it for 99 cents.

Lead Gen
Every lead gen company has a generic, “Book a Demo” or, “Get in Touch” Call To Action. Any time someone lands on your Twitter profile or Linkedin page after clicking a piece of content and see these calls to action, they puke.

But, if you had a 99-cent ebook going more in-depth about the content you create, they’re more likely to buy the book than schedule a call. Once they buy the book, you can email them a few days later and say something like, “Hey, did you get a chance to read it? What’s your favorite part? You know we offer a service to do this for you…”

E-comm
I’m surprised more e-commerce brands don’t use this growth hack. First off, it’s an easy order bump. Secondly, it creates SO MUCH brand affinity.

But, before we get into some examples, let me answer the most popular question I get around this growth hack..."Why not give it away for free?"

Well, it qualifies your audience. If someone is willing to go through the extra 20 seconds to punch in their credit card to spend $1 on an ebook, that shows they have way more interest in what you could sell them than if they simply input their email and received it that way.

Here are a few unique examples I love:

Facebook Ads Agency - Sell a 99-cent ebook about how to correctly set up a Facebook ad account. After, post content all about different Facebook ad strategies for your target audience and everyone will want your “Bulletproof Facebook Ads Account Structure Guide.”

Luxury Sleep Mask Brand - Sell a 99-cent ebook titled, “10 Unique Ways To Get Better Sleep” and feature your luxury sleep mask as the 10th thing with a little discount. Afterwards, feature it in an exit pop-up on the site or even show it as an order bump. If your ebook helps them get better sleep, they will be a loyal customer forever.

Paid Community Business - Let’s say you sell a $29/mo community subscription helping women monetize their Instagrams. You'd want to create a 99-cent ebook titled, “5 Unique Ways Women Are Monetizing Their IG” and make it as your link in bio everywhere. You’ll get a higher conversion than just simply dropping them onto a page and asking for $29/mo. In addition, you can follow up with them days later saying, “Hey, did you like those 5 tips? I have 100+ more inside my community subscriptions."

To wrap up it all up, I would ask you this...

If putting together a listicle-style ebook related to your product or service takes you only a couple of hours in Canva, why NOT create a 99-cent ebook? ;)

Great marketers use a short and catchy 99-cent ebook as their top-of-the-funnel lead magnet to increase leads and/or build brand affinity!
