Did You See The Purple Cow?
This week I want to talk about standing out, because in today's hyper-competitive landscape, it’s something very few brands do well. And if there’s one marketing book that’s tattooed on my brain, it’s Purple Cow. In this book, advertising legend, Seth Godin argues that in a world full of “brown cows” … businesses that blend in and offer the same old products or services are going nowhere fast. The only way to succeed in today’s highly competitive landscape is to become a Purple Cow, something truly remarkable.
He goes DEEP on the definition of that word. Most people don’t put 2 and 2 together to realize remarkable really means “wroth of attention, or making a mark about” aka a purple cow! Something so unique you have to not only pay attention to it but also tell people about it.
Because it’s never been easier to start a business, simply setting up shop and telling people why your product or service is better than everyone else is not enough. You have to take the extra split second to figure out how to be the purple cow in your cluster of brands / service providers selling more or less the same thing to the same people.
So, in the spirit of Purple Cow, I’ve gathered three killer examples of products or service providers companies that are taking this concept and running with it. Let’s dive in!
1 - The Obvious: Noah Kagan’s Book Cover
Let’s start with a literal example. Noah Ab tested the color of his book to make sure it stood out on the shelf.
Every Other Option: Blue or white or black
Noah Kagan’s: Bright green
2 - Service Provider: Hell’s Creative
Funny enough I actually read Purple Cow for the first time early in my agency and knew I had to use it to stand out in the sea of sameness from every other agency.
Think about it like this: if you are searching for an agency, you have likely been on 20 different agency websites that all say the same thing… that they were the best or they had the best case studies.
But when you land on my agency’s? 4X ROI. Something totally different & fresh.
Every Other Option: best in-class or marketing powerhouse or the #1 growth squad or thrive with an established marketing agency

3 - Frequency: Geico
There’s another way to tap into this Purple Cow marketing strategy and it’s frequency! Simply by “being everywhere” and staying top of mind more than any other competitor… you stand out more than anyone else. If a friend asked someone who lives in NYC what company they would recommend for car insurance, despite that person not owning a car because they live in NYC & never had any experience with a car insurance provider… who are they likely to recommend? Geico!
Why? Because they are “remarkable” in that they spend $1b+ a year to make sure the moment you think of car insurance, you think of them!
Every Other Option: are passers-by in the night
