🚀 This Week’s Growth Hack: How Peacock Increases Subscriber LTV
The average annual churn rate for all US streamers (think Netflix, MAX, Disney+ …) is around 47% which is mind-blowingly high to me! A recent report said consumers are taking forever to find shows to watch, which means these streaming platforms need to find ways to get people to watch more shows, in the hopes of preventing a consistent mad dash to cancel subscriptions.
Well NBCUniversal’s platform Peacock has figured out a simple Growth Hack to help their subscribers find content to watch on their platform:
Emails!
That’s right. Annabella Goff, Peacock’s senior director of CRM, said both free and paid subscribers of Peacock are sent three to five emails each week depending on how active they are on the service.
You think they would focus a ton of AB tests on recommendations once people open the app ut this Growth Hack is working gangbusters for them!
Last year, an email campaign that was sent to 40m+ users featuring a year-in-review breakdown of their watch history on Peacock translated to a 20% decrease in churn rate among paying subscribers within a 30-day window! Plus a 6% increase in conversion rate from free to paying user.
And knowing that Peacock sends more emails than any other streaming platform, it puts this industry stat into perspective:
“…every single premium subscription streamer saw churn rates in June 2023 increase compared to the year prior—with the exception of Peacock, which saw churn rates decline 2%, according to data from Antenna.”

Ok but, what’s the Growth Hacks Max? Use usage or recommendation emails to increase LTV and decrease churn! How do you do that? Time for my signature…
Examples
E-Commerce - Say you run a clothing brand selling premium t-shirts… You could send an email every month saying “You recently bought X product, 60% of people who bought that product also bought Y & Z… Click here to add Y & Z to your wardrobe” …
You could also send an email to all of your customers every year (or every quarter or just anytime you need more sales) showing how many total purchases they have made to date and mention what % of customers have purchased that many things… So you could congratulate them by saying you are one of our top 10% of most loyal customers, here’s 10% off for being a top 10% most loyal customer!
SaaS - Say you run a social media scheduling tool… Simply send a monthly email that shows how many posts the user scheduled that month, and compare it to how many posts the average user schedules per month, and compare it to the amount of posts the fastest-growing social channels share per month…
Agency - Man I did this with my agency and it was such a hack! Every month when we sent our clients their trailing 30 days performance report, we would make the first slide of the report a hand written, detailed, bullet point list, of everything we did for them that month. My Director of Accounts would literally go through her email inbox and see that in the last 30 days, for a particular client, might have we coordinated assets for a photoshoot for them, or got a new campaign live, or finally achieved some growth goal… By reminding the clients every month what exactly we did for them, they felt more comfortable paying the next month’s retainer…
