🚀 This Week’s Growth Hack: Barbie’s Rise To Fame (Ruth Handler’s Edition)

The deep dives and case studies of the new Barbie Movie’s marketing campaigns have been beaten to a pulp. We get it, they spend hundreds of millions on brand partnerships!

But I was wondering, how did Barbie become so popular in the first place?

What I learned in my research was that Barbie’s inventor used a Growth hack to sell way more toy dolls than anyone else. So let’s dive into this Growth Hack:

Part 1: Ruth Handler and the Barbie Phenomenon

Ruth Handler unveiled Barbie in 1959, capturing the essence of adulthood in a doll's form. To promote this innovative product, Handler realized the immense potential of television, a rapidly growing medium at the time. At the time, toys were not marketed in kids’ TV shows. This was her “big idea” … She ingeniously chose to showcase Barbie in TV commercials aired during children's programming, capitalizing on the idea that kids watching their favorite shows would inevitably be drawn to the alluring charm of the doll. This marketing approach was groundbreaking, as it directly targeted the primary consumers – children – and allowed them to influence their parents' buying decisions.

Part 2: The Revolutionary Impact of Pester Power

Ruth Handler's use of TV ads for Barbie fundamentally transformed the way toys were marketed. By integrating commercials into children's shows, she tapped into the power of pester power, wherein children's enthusiasm and desire for the toy compelled parents to purchase it. This approach revolutionized marketing by recognizing children as influential consumers and demonstrated the effectiveness of advertising directly to the young demographic.

Part 3: How You Can Use Pester Power

SaaS Brands - Say you sell a sales software… You could build a dedicated sales page for sales reps to send to their Head of Sales or VP of Sales talking about the benefits to the sales reps… arming the sales rep with collateral they need to “pester” their leader to buy this tool for them…

Agencies - You can run ads on LinkedIn towards, or send cold emails to, CMOs with messaging around “arming you with the case studies and data you need to convince your CEO to hire us” …

E-Commerce Brands - Say you sell hats marketed towards dads… You could run ads before Father's Day to mothers (yes that’s a targeting option on Facebook ads) with some clever language like “Click here to send a text to your wife asking her to buy you this hat for Father’s Day” …

Conclusion:

Ruth Handler's understanding of children's influence on purchasing decisions paved the way for companies to connect with their audiences more effectively.

How are you going to use Pester Power to help grow your business?
