Why Arenā€™t You Priming?

Iā€™ve got some personal news to share!

Last week, my wife gave birth to our first childā€¦ six weeks early.

It was a wild, emotional, and exhausting week, but after just 7 days in the NICU, she scored a 10/10 APGARS (overall health) score & is finally home. My wife & I couldnā€™t be happier and grateful that they both are healthy!

How does that relate to the Growth Hack of The Week? Well, a few weeks ago, I was shopping for an air filter to put in the cornerwe can break that. I've been working with Marketing Max, I'm okay, um, so where's read some personal messages 6 weeks earlier. It was wild, emotional, exhausting. After being happy, oh a few weeks ago I was shopping for an air filter to put in the corner of her nursery, and this one Instagram ad kept following me around. It was so well-done that I couldnā€™t stop thinking about it.

It started with B-roll footage of raging wildfires, thick factory smoke, and an ominous stat about how todayā€™s air has something like 7X more pollutants than just a few years ago. Then it hit me with a gut punch: Thatā€™s why you need to keep your family safe. And thatā€™s why you should buy this specific air filter.

And you know what? It worked. I bought the damn filter.

Not because it shouted about HEPA technology or "industry-leading performance"or had some fancy Bluetooth app (this one didnā€™t) but because it primed me to fully understand and acknowledge the problem before it even introduced the product.

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ šŸ’” Most brands make the mistake of starting with:

ā€œHereā€™s our product and why itā€™s great!ā€

But the best ones start by painting the problem in a way that makes you feel the problem that their product or service solves, deep in your bones.

Thenā€¦ because my daughter was born early, something happened that drove this marketing point home even harder.

Before we could bring her home, we had to watch a baby CPR training video. The first five minutes werenā€™t about how to do CPR. Instead, it featured two parents telling the gut-wrenching story of when their baby suddenly stopped breathing a month after birth.

Before they explained that baby CPR saved their child's life, they made sure we fully grasped just how terrifying it would be if we werenā€™t prepared.

And let me tell you, those five minutes made me lean in and pay attention way more than if the video had just jumped into instructions.

So, it took my daughter being born to finally make Priming the Growth Hack of the Week.

How You Can Use Priming This Week:

1ļøāƒ£ E-Commerce Example: The Air Filter Ad, But For Your Product

Most brands start their ads with, "Our product does XYZ and has these amazing features!" Instead, flip the script:

  • If you sell skincare, donā€™t start with your serum. Start with a close-up of irritated, dry skin and the stat that 90% of people have dehydrated skin without realizing it.

  • If you sell ergonomic chairs, donā€™t start with lumbar support features. Start with a montage of people hunched over in pain, followed by ā€œBack pain is the #1 cause of lost productivity.ā€

  • If you sell meal prep kits, donā€™t start with meal options. Start with a fast-cut montage of people scrolling Uber Eats, stressed about dinner, and then drop, "You're wasting $350+ a month on delivery fees and donā€™t even realize it."

Make them feel the problem before you show them the solution.

2ļøāƒ£ Marketing Agencies: Use Priming in Follow-Up Emails

Letā€™s say you run an SEO agency, and a lead just ghosted you after a discovery call. Instead of sending a, "Hey, just following up!" email (which is a waste of everyoneā€™s time), send this instead:
