🚀 This Week's Growth Hack:
How To Find Your #1 Marketing Channel
Let’s talk about the silent killer of your marketing performance.
I call it: The Junk Traffic Tax.
It’s the phantom toll your business pays every day from bot clicks, 3-second bounces, and users whose browser crashed before the page even loaded. It’s not just annoying when you see this in your analytics tool; it’s warping your entire perception of what’s working. Many of my clients who suffer from Junk Traffic Tax don’t even realise it but:
📉 It’s making their top landing page look like a flop.
📉 It’s making their best ad look unprofitable.
📉 It’s making their real conversion rate look worse than it is.
So this week’s growth hack is simple: Kill the junk traffic so you can find your actual #1 marketing channel.
Here are 5 ways I’ve seen operators do it, most of them in under 10 minutes.
🛠 1. Filter Bots at the Source
Facebook and Google’s automated placements love sending traffic from click farms and low-quality placements.
The fix?
👉 Inside Facebook Ads Manager, go to “Placements” and exclude Audience Network and in-stream video.
👉 In Google Ads, turn off Display Network by default unless you really know what you’re doing.
Easy win, cleaner data.
🛠 2. Block Junk Referrers
Every now and then, a spam site starts sending hundreds of junk clicks to your store.
Create a list of blocked referrers in GA4 or in your server logs. There’s almost no downside here, and it protects your metrics from getting warped.
(Orrrrrrr trade GA4 for heatmap’s new web analytics tool that automatically cuts out a lot of the Junk Traffic for you, here!)
🛠 3. Use Click Delay as a Filter
This is one of my favorite scrappy hacks. Add a simple script that only fires your main conversion pixel after 5 seconds on the page.
If someone bounces in 2 seconds, the pixel never fires.
You’re now filtering out the trash from your analytics without impacting real users.
Bonus: Most pixel tools support this kind of logic out of the box if you’re using GTM.
🛠 4. Ditch the Cookie Banner Chaos
Many cookie banners delay tracking until the user consents, which sounds fine until you realize half your conversions don’t get counted.
The fix? Use a tool that doesn’t rely on cookies at all.
My friends over at Heatmap just launched a web analytics tool that I’ve been begging someone to make for years!
No cookie compliance issues. Real-time data. Plug-and-play for e-com. Two-minute install. Easy-to-understand reports. And so much more! I’m rolled it out to all my clients last week and youwould be silly not to at least take it for a spin here.
🛠 5. Watch Session Replays (Seriously)
Sometimes you think traffic is junk, but the session replay tells a different story.
One user I thought was fake actually clicked 6 things in 3 seconds—turns out it was a real person rage clicking my broken “Add to Cart” button.
Watch replays for 10 mins. You’ll never look at your bounce rate the same again.
👉🏼 The bottom line? The Junk Traffic Tax is real. And if you’re scaling paid traffic, it’s only getting worse.
💡 My Main Point: Once you get rid of the Junk Traffic, your analytics tool, which should be Heatmap’s new one, will surface your #1 marketing channel aka what you should be spending all your time and energy and moeny doubling down on!
Good growth marketers don’t just generate traffic, they clean it. Filter it. Fix it. And only then, analytize it to see what’s working and not workin!
So this week, I challenge you:
Find 3 ways to kill the junk. Your data (and your wallet) will thank you.
Want the tool I mentioned with no cookies, instant installs with additional plug-and-play CRO tools like scroll maps, funnels, and session replays?
